ABOUT RJ JOHNSON

In 1989, RJ joined Root 1, one of Austin's pioneering reggae bands. Together they produced and engineered three albums on 2″ tape, learning how to capture live energy without compromise.

That same year, attending Reggae Sunsplash in Jamaica sealed the path. The music was no longer entertainment — it was purpose.

Since 1988, RJ has hosted Reggae Evolution on KAZI 88.7 FM, holding space for reggae culture in Texas for over three decades.

Sound matters. Spirit matters. Integrity matters. Physical music still matters.

Music For Life Records is rooted in Jamaican riddim culture.

The great Jamaican labels do not simply release songs — they "create a sound." Distinct basslines. Recognizable drum patterns. Riddims that carry generations of voices.

From Kingston to the wider Caribbean and global diaspora, reggae has always been producer-led, bass-driven, and riddim-first. We want to keep that intact.

This is the tradition that informs the work.

However it starts, the goal is the same: build a foundation strong enough to carry the message.

The long-term vision of Music For Life Records is to continue building a catalog of original riddims that stand the test of time — voiced by artists across Jamaica, the Caribbean, Texas, Africa, Europe, and the global diaspora.
